Instigated by the views of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Dutch network companies established GGNI to market Dutch natural gas knowledge worldwide. All requests for expert consultancy support to the ministry and the Dutch network companies are forwarded to GGNI. GGNI senior industry experts are expert staff from the Dutch network companies.
Our shareholders
Alliander NV, Enexis Holding NV, NV Nederlandse Gasunie and Stedin Netbeheer BV participate in GGNI. Together they operate many thousands of kilometres of high pressure and distribution pipelines. They supply natural gas to 98% of all households in the Netherlands and Northern Germany and to over 600 industrial exits.
Alliander
The business units Liander and Liandon make up the network company Alliander whose staff of around 6,000 is primarily responsible for the uninterrupted energy distribution in large areas of the Netherlands (2.8 million customers) and in Germany (20,000 electricity grid connections) in addition to construction and maintenance of public lighting in the city of Berlin. Liander manages the gas and electricity networks in its service area. Liandon designs and realises complex energy infrastructures.
Alliander, formerly known as n.v. Nuon -a vertically integrated energy company, owning and operating both a network company and a production and supply company-. A change in Dutch legislation forced the company to unbundle into an independent network company and an independent production and supply company. The production and supply company has been sold to Vattenvall AB.Enexis
Since 2009 Enexis is the new name of Essent Netwerk, which, under different brand names, managed energy grids in the Netherlands for over 100 years. Enexis manages the energy network in seven counties in northern, eastern, and southern Netherlands. It is responsible for the connection of approximately 2.6 million households, businesses and municipalities.
Enexis is leading the development of an infrastructure for fuelling /charging electric transportation. In the development of Mobile Smart Grid Enexis plays a leading role. Mobile Smart Grid is an electricity network that intelligently integrates the actions of all the grid users and generators. The goal is an affordable and reliable energy infrastructure, which optimizes the support for the transition to renewables.Gasunie
Gasunie was established as a vertically integrated gas company in 1963. In 2005 it became one of the first fully unbundled gas infrastructure companies in Europe. Today Gasunie is one of Europe’s biggest gas infrastructure companies. It is the first European gas transmission company with a cross-border network, consisting of more than 15,000 kilometres of pipeline in the Netherlands and Germany, connections to national and international pipeline systems and hundreds of installations, including an LNG peak shaver. Underground gas storage facilities are under construction.
Gasunie is one of the leading partners in Gate LNG terminal and in the BBL pipeline. Gasunie is also partner in the NEL and Nord Stream pipelines. Its brand and its quality of operations and assets are valued around the world.Stedin
Stedin is a 100% subsidiary of Eneco Holding NV. As a system operator Stedin is responsible for a safe and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity and gas in the Randstad; the Rotterdam-The Hague-Utrecht triangle, where it serves nearly two million private, corporate and government customers and where it is responsible for construction, expansion and maintenance of the transmission and distribution systems.
Stedin works primarily in a dynamic urban environment with complex issues in a dense network. Currently it is developing the new infrastructure for the Maasvlakte, the extension of Europoort harbour and industrial area and for the Utrecht Station Area.Our mission
GGNI offers the knowledge and experience of senior Dutch industry experts to authorities, governments and infrastructure companies worldwide for training and consultancy assignments with limited duration.
Our ambitions
Through the bundling of all natural gas knowledge from the Netherlands in GGNI we strengthened the international position of the Netherlands as a gas country. GGNI has no commercial ambitions; we wish to contribute to worldwide knowledge transfer.
Our objectives
- To provide advice and assist governments network companies and to answer questions and to solve problems related to the transport, distribution and storage of natural gas by senior Dutch industry experts.
- To offer traineeships to young talented students and young graduates from the Netherlands and abroad, to secure future excellence in storage, transport, distribution and application of natural gas.
